What do I need to know...
About Gang Awareness?
Federal Way, like every city in the nation, is faced with the challenge of keeping gangs out of our city and unable to recruit our youth.
Youth are vulnerable to the draw of gangs when they are looking for a sense of belonging or the presumed safety they believe a gang can offer, for extra cash, or to be around friends and family members who are already part of a gang.
Check our Additional Resources page for some information about gang prevention or see the National Gang Center for general information about gangs.
About Gang Prevention?
One of the most consistent messages about how to prevent youth from joining gangs is to reach students before they engage in violence or gang activity. The Federal Way police are tough on crime, but the problem wont stop until the underlying reasons for the behavior are addressed.
In Federal Way, we have many service organizations that can help our youth become involved in positive, rewarding activities outside of school that offer consistent support and alternatives to gangs. See the Federal Way Youth Programs page for details on these great organizations!
Parents and families may have concerns about the influence of gangs on their children. See the Parents page for further information about this.
It will take all levels of our community getting involved to intervene and provide safe alternatives for youth. There are organizations doing great work, and many of those organizations need volunteers to keep up the momentum. Adult to youth mentoring is one of the most effective ways to make a difference in a young persons life. See the Call to Action page for ways you can get involved!
